X-ray is an imaging study that takes pictures of bones and soft tissues. The images show the parts of the body in different shades of black and white. This is because different tissues absorb different amounts of radiation. Calcium in bones absorbs x-rays the most, so bones look white. Fat and other soft tissues absorb less and look gray. Air absorbs the least, so lungs look black. X-rays use safe amounts of radiation to create these pictures. The images help healthcare providers diagnose a wide range of conditions and plan treatments. Usually, X-rays are used to evaluate broken bones, dislocated joints and other bone injuries.
